In marginalized communities like Batey Libertad, potable drinking water is in short supply. Many residents are forced to risk waterborne diseases or purchase many small plastic bags of drinking water, sold at local stores. These bags are costly over time and generate waste in the community. To help families avoid this trap, EAB puts up the deposit so they can afford larger, refillable water jugs, and gives them Nalgene bottles to reduce dependence on disposable bags.
